"A Thing or Two About Loyalty" is the ninth episode of Season 1 of Robin Hood.

Plot[]

Gisborne, Marian and the Sheriff watch as Gisborne’s friend Lambert demonstrates explosions using Greek fire. Sceptical of the Sheriff's promise that he will not use the powder destructively, Lambert is reluctant to hand over the ledger containing the instructions to make more of the black powder. He attempts to escape with his knowledge, but fails.

The outlaws follow the scene from afar, knowing that they need to stop the Sheriff from using this new weapon. Much volunteers to get arrested so that they can release Lambert. He doesn’t have time to fully execute the plan, because after his arrest he is recognised and taken to see the Sheriff.

The Sheriff wants Lambert tortured, and expresses his frustration towards Gisborne. He takes Gisborne off the Greek fire project, even though it was his idea. As for Much, the Sheriff knows that by hanging him, he would only have a martyr at his hands. Instead, Much is made the Earl of Bonchurch. The Sheriff hopes to use this as an opportunity to get information about Robin Hood and potentially turn Much against his master. The other outlaws watch as Much is taken to Bonchurch.

Lambert, despite being tortured, refuses to reveal the location of the ledger.

Gisborne is angry that he was side-lined by the Sheriff. Marian tries to convince him to help Lambert escape by taking him to Kirklees during the next Council of Nobles. This way Gisborne can find out the location of the ledger and gain the Sheriff’s favour again. The Sheriff listens in on the conversation.

At Bonchurch, Much is convinced that the whole thing is a trap. He meets a serving girl named Eve, who is secretly a spy for the Sheriff. Later Marian arrives to see Much, and gives him a letter to pass on to Robin.

Robin sneaks into the castle to release Lambert. He is unable to do so, because both of Lambert’s legs have been broken. Robin manages to convince Lambert to reveal the location of the ledger to him, promising to hide it and then return with his friends to help Lambert escape. As Robin leaves, he makes sure to tell a guard to tell the Sheriff that Lambert no longer knows where the ledger is. Robin goes to get his friends and together they find the ledger in a barrel.

While Much is taking a bath, Robin arrives to see him. Robin is pleased that now they have someone on the inside. Much passes on Marian’s letter to him.

Next Robin goes to see Marian, who tells him about the plan she came up with Gisborne. She tells Robin to intercept Gisborne and Lambert when they travel to Kirklees so that they can truly rescue Lambert. She also insists that Robin needs to burn the ledger to stop the black powder from being used as a weapon.

The Sheriff tells Gisborne that Lambert was more willing to trust Robin than him with the location of the ledger. He then goes down to the dungeons to kill Lambert, since he now has no use for him.

At the Council of Nobles, Marian is surprised to see Guy. She is upset after hearing about Lambert’s death. While Much is initially excited about being on the Council of Nobles, he soon finds that any influence he hoped to have is quickly squelched by the Sheriff and his supporters.

Marian tells the outlaws about Lambert’s fate. Robin comforts her, seeing that she’s still upset about it. Djaq is reading the ledger, but Will takes it and tries to burn it. Djaq argues against it, as her people have been trying for years to discover the recipe and have so far failed. Robin decides that they need to destroy the three barrels of black powder the Sheriff already has.

Much does help the peasants under his direct rule; throwing a party for them and handing out food and coin, which Eve thanks him for. Marian and Much speak in private while Eve spies on them. She wants him to tell Eve that the ledger is hidden in the remaining black powder so that the Sheriff can lead the outlaws to it.

Much is reluctant to lie to Eve. While he has a bath, he tells Eve to pour herself one as well. They sing together, and Eve tries to convince him to stay at Bonchurch. Much is about to tell Marian’s lie to her, but when he can’t do it, Eve is thankful. Instead, she asks him what he wants her to tell the Sheriff, revealing that in reality she is on Much’s side. Later Eve goes to the Sheriff and tells him that the ledger is among the black powder.

Guy and Marian argue. She is angry at him for letting Lambert die, and therefore refuses to wear the ring he gave her. He reminds her that he is the only thing that can protect her from the Sheriff.

Much is leaving Bonchurch. He tells Eve to take everything valuable, and promises to find her when there is justice again. The two share a kiss before parting ways.

Following the Sheriff’s orders, Gisborne goes to search the barrels of black powder, leading the outlaws right to the cave where they are hidden. Gisborne leaves, but when he reports to the Sheriff, the two realise this was a trick. They return to the cave, but Robin explodes all the remaining black powder by shooting a flaming arrow into the cave.

Robin decides to burn the ledger, and throws it into the fire. While the others tease Much about his brief status as a lord, Djaq salvages and hides the ledger.
