"Tattoo? What Tattoo?" is the eighth episode of Season 1 of Robin Hood.

Plot[]

Robin has a nightmare about his time at the Holy Land. He dreams of the Saracen attack where he got injured. This attack also broke an existing truce. One of the attackers tries to assassinate King Richard, and Robin rushes in to save the King. The attacker had a tattoo of a wolf’s head on his arm, which Robin sees as he cuts his arm.

When Robin wakes up, Much immediately guesses what his nightmare was about. He begins talking about the party Gisborne is hosting at Locksley Manor in honour of the King’s birthday. At said party, Gisborne announces his engagement to Lady Marian and gives her a ring. The outlaws show up to sabotage the ffeast and begin collecting valuables from the guests, including Marian’s ring. This enrages Gisborne, and while the other outlaws begin making their escape before the Sheriff can make it to the manor, Robin and Gisborne begin to fight. As Gisborne’s sleeve rips, Robin sees a tattoo on Guy's arm which he recognizes as the same tattoo as King Richard’s would-be assassin. He’s in shock, and Djaq has to pull him out of it, but this results in her being captured.

Gisborne follows Robin into the forest. Robin tries to ask him who else was involved with the assassination attempt, but Gisborne won’t give him answers. The two begin fighting, and the other outlaws have to run in to stop Robin from killing Gisborne, who gets knocked out. Finally, Will notices that Djaq is missing. Robin is obsessed with killing Gisborne, and won’t hear out the others when they tell him that they have to save Djaq. They insist on giving Guy a fair trial, something Robin has always advocated but wants to forgo in this case because of the tattoo, which he sees as undeniable proof. John knocks out Robin and they tie him up along with Gisborne.

In the castle dungeons Djaq uses the acid in her vial to melt the hinges of the cell door. This allows her to escape, but she immediately gets caught. The Sheriff tries the acid on Djaq’s arm, and demands that Djaq make some more for him. Djaq is taken to an alchemist’s laboratory to work.

At the forest, Robin finally wakes up. Much – who is supposed to be guarding them – lets Robin loose. Robin begins threatening Guy, who attacks Robin's integrity in reply. Much stops Robin from torturing Guy, but runs off when Robin yells at him and tells him to go. Robin promptly unties Gisborne, and a brutal- fistfight ensues, Guy tossing provocative insults at Robin the entire time. Gisborne begins to make one last bawdy insinuation about Marian, and Robin knocks him unconscious, but is too exhausted to do anything further.

Meanwhile, Djaq makes smoke in the laboratory. This gives her a chance to escape, and she runs into the other outlaws, who have sneaked in to rescue her. Djaq is recaptured before she can make her escape down a sewage drain with them.

Much finally returns to Robin with Marian, who helps him get Robin under control. He tells her about Gisborne’s tattoo and the assassination attempt. Marian realises that the previous winter Gisborne was allegedly sick for many weeks, during which no-one was allowed to see him. The others return, and they try and fail to persuade Robin to rescue Djaq. Marian finds out Djaq is a woman, and to try and convince Robin further, Will and Allan simultaneously confess their feelings toward Djaq: Allan says he likes her, and Will admits that he thinks he loves her. Marian suggests trading prisoners, and after Robin refuses to agree to the exchange, Little John is forced to knock him out again.

Marian hurries to Nottingham, and makes it into the castle just before the Sheriff is about to torture Djaq. She tells about the prisoner exchange and pleads with the Sheriff to agree to it.

Robin wakes up, and Much lets him know the others have gone ahead with the exchange at the mine. On the way to the exchange, the Sheriff discovers Djaq is female, and makes lewd comments about her. In the midst of the exchange, Robin arrives, and reveals to the Sheriff that he knows about the assassination attempt. He is confident that he will have justice, as all he needs do is show King Richard Gisborne's tattoo when he returns. The irritated Sheriff, notwithstanding Guy's agonised whimpering, promptly burns the tattoo from Guy's arm with the last of Djaq's confiscated acid.

As the outlaws get ready to eat dinner, Djaq asks Robin if there could have been peace if it weren’t for Gisborne. She is slightly surprised that the others (especially Robin), were willing to give him up to save her.
