"Ducking and Diving" is the fifth episode of Season 2 of Robin Hood and the 18th episode of the series as a whole.

Plot[]

Henry of Lewes is on his way to Nottingham to tell the Sheriff where King Richard will land when he arrives to England. Robin has found out about this through Marian, so Allan advices Gisborne to change Henry’s route. When Henry does not get caught in the outlaws’ trap, Robin realises that there is a spy in the camp. He orders the others to go back to the camp while he goes to Nottingham to speak with Marian. Much follows him despite being told not to, and Robin reveals his suspicions to him and sends Much back to the camp.

Henry does make it to the castle, but on his way there he was stung by a bee and suffered an allergic reaction, which made him unconscious. The Sheriff’s physician, Blight, is unable to wake Henry up with his leeches, so Gisborne goes to get Matilda, a wise woman. Matilda is unwilling to help because her daughter Rosa is about to give birth, but the Sheriff promises to let her go if she treats Henry.

Robin goes to see Matilda, and she stops him from outright killing Henry. Instead, she makes a potion that will make Henry delirious for a while. The Sheriff comes to see Henry just as he is waking up and spots Robin, who is then chased away by guards.

Marian gets permission from Gisborne to spend some time without a guard following her everywhere. She uses this freedom to spy on Guy, who meets with a tavern girl and leaves money with her. Marian tells Robin about this, and is later caught by Gisborne. She manages to make up a lie about wanting to spend time with Gisborne.

Much returns to the camp, agitated. He lets everyone know that Robin thinks there is a spy among them, and everyone starts blaming each other. They are interrupted by Robin, who arrives with Rosa. The gang continues to fight about the possible traitor, and Robin gives the spy a chance to confess. Allan stays silent, and Robin promises to find the traitor.

Henry is still delirious, and Blight realises that Matilda has poisoned him. When she refuses to tell how Henry can be cured, she gets accused of being a witch. Marian rushes to the forest to warn the outlaws that Matilda will be dunked into the Locksley pond.

Rosa’s baby is the wrong way around, so Djaq asks John to turn it the right way around. As Allan takes food to Djaq, the two talk about the spy in the camp. Djaq compares the situation to that of Tom’s, Allan’s brother, and says that she believes Allan to be a good man – implying that she already knows Allan is the spy. The others rush to save Matilda while Djaq and John stay behind to help Rosa deliver her baby.

As Matilda is being dunked into the pond, Robin helps her escape. When everyone’s attention is on the miraculous escape, Will and Allan grab Henry.

Meanwhile Rosa suffers through a painful childbirth in the forest. John comforts her and talks about his wife, Alice, whom he couldn’t support when their son was born. Rosa gives birth to a baby girl, whom she names Alice.

As Matilda is presenting Alice to Much, Henry comes to his senses and grabs a knife, holding it to Much’s chest. Robin shoots him to save Much.

Will and Robin bury Henry, and Robin tells Will about the serving maid Marian saw at the tavern. He pretends to banish Will, telling the others to scatter while he goes to the castle to find out what Gisborne knows. Djaq tries to protest, but Robin won’t let her speak.

Allan goes to the tavern, but Robin catches him there, revealing that Will’s banishment was a trap. Allan tries to plead with Robin, saying that he was going to give the money back. Robin lets Allan live, but exiles him from the gang.

Robin returns to the forest to meet with the others. He explains everything, and lets them know that Allan is now gone.
