"Will You Tolerate This?" is the first episode of Season 1 of Robin Hood.

Plot[]

As Allan A Dale is poaching in a forest, he is caught by guards. The guards threaten to cut off his hand as a punishment, but agree to only take a finger after Allan makes up a lie about having a pregnant wife. Just as the finger is about to be cut, Robin of Locksley, disguised as an outlaw, shows up and threatens the guards. His servant and friend, Much, is hiding in the bushes and is making it seem like there are more men in the forest. The guards decide to let Allan go. As they are about to leave, Much ruins the plan by shouting after the guards, making them realise that there are in fact only two men.

Robin and Much run from the guards, and manage to escape by hiding under a tree. Once they are in the clear, they continue their journey. The pair has been away from home for five years, fighting in the Crusade at the Holy Land. Much talks about how much he has missed home, and as he is about to sing, Robin stops him.

Before they make it home, Robin and Much meet a man digging a ditch. They agree to help after being promised food as compensation. After working for a while, Robin goes to talk with the man’s daughter, Sarah. The two flirt and end up kissing. Meanwhile the man tells Much about the new Sheriff and the trouble he has brought with him, but Much is distracted as he tries to keep the man from seeing Robin and Sarah. He fails, and the man goes to fight Robin. Much gets Robin his sword. Robin fights with the man, and after kissing Sarah one more time, Robin backflips off the second floor of the building. He and Much escape once again. That night they try to keep warm by a campfire. Much is annoyed at Robin for causing trouble and making them miss out on a meal.

The next day Robin and Much arrive home to Locksley. The villagers are acting strangely, and after speaking to Dan Scarlett, Robin and Much find out that a lot has changed. Dan has lost his hand after his sons, Will and Luke, went poaching, and his wife Jane has died. This is all due to the new Sheriff and Guy of Gisborne, who has been running Robin’s estate in his absence. Luke comes up to show Robin his bow, and Robin instructs him on how to shoot better. Gisborne’s men arrive, and Will hides Luke’s bow. The villagers are rounded up, and Guy of Gisborne announces that sacks of flour have been stolen by Benedict Giddens, and he demands to know who helped the boy. As Gisborne is about to punish Benedict, Robin steps out and reveals himself to be the rightful Lord of Locksley.

In the Locksley Manor, Robin greets the servants, including Thornton. He reveals to Thornton that Much has been made a free man, and he will be given Bonchurch. Gisborne says that he has been in Locksley for four winters, and during the conversation he claims to have seen Robin fight, but cannot say when. Robin wants to pardon his serfs, but Gisborne says to speak about it with the Sheriff.

Much is taking a bath, and a servant asks him about the war. This makes him think about all the horrors he has seen, but he hides his tears quickly as Robin enters the room to announce that he is going to go see the old sheriff. As he is getting ready, Robin tells Thornton to feed all the people.

At Knighton, spies watch as Robin and Much arrive. Edward of Knighton, the previous sheriff, tells the two to go away, and his daughter, Lady Marian, even threatens Robin with a bow. After they close the door, Robin comments on the fact that Marian is still unmarried.

When Robin returns to Locksley, the people thank him for the food. Dan tells him that Benedict has revealed that Will and Luke were involved in the flour theft, and that the boys have been taken to Nottingham.

Robin and Much go to Nottingham, but it is not the place they remember. There is no market, and there are much more poor people than there should be. At the castle, Sheriff Vaisey laughs at Gisborne for loosing Locksley, though he promises to get it back.

Robin arrives in time to interrupt the Council of Nobles, where the Sheriff is claiming that they need to collect more taxes to fund King Richard’s war. Robin challenges this idea, and even suggests stopping the war taxes completely to allow the people to feed themselves better. This angers the Sheriff, and after the meeting, he goes to kill one of his birds by crushing it in his hands.

Marian pulls Robin aside, and says that her father wants to speak to him. She explains that there are spies watching them, and that Robin should come to Knighton at midnight. Robin tries to flirt with her, but Marian stops him before they can kiss.

Robin and Much go see the boys from Locksley. Allan has also ended up in jail, and claims to be from Locksley. Robin finds out the boys are being hanged. Because of Allan’s lie, he too will share the same fate.

There is a feast at the Great Hall to celebrate Robin’s return. Robin asks the Sheriff to pardon the boys, but he refuses. Gisborne asks Marian to accompany him to the celebrations, and she accepts, which bothers Robin.

When Robin and Much go to visit Knighton at night, they find out how Prince John gave Nottingham to Vaisey. Edward advices Robin not to challenge the Sheriff in public, and tells him to fight from within the system instead. Marian agrees with her father, and explains that the hangings are a test – Robin must not fight the Sheriff on the matter in order to pass. That night Robin stays up to ponder his decision.

The next day, at the execution, Robin is forced to read out the sentence. The Sheriff threatens to throw Much down from the castle walls if Robin doesn’t cooperate. Robin has arranged a scheme to claim that the boys became novices the previous night, but the plan fails, and the Sheriff orders the execution to go forward. Robin grabs a bow from a nearby guard, and releases Benedict, Allan, Will and Luke by shooting their nooses. As he does so, he gives a short speech about how he will not tolerate injustice. The guards attack him, and Robin begins to fight them. The guards that are holding Much are about to throw him down, but Robin saves him by throwing a sword that manages to knock out the guards. As Dan leads Luke and Benedict away from the courtyard, Marian saves Robin from a guard by throwing her dagger, disguised as a hairpin, at said guard. Robin, Much, Allan and Will escape Nottingham on horseback.

That night the four men sit by a fire at the forest. After Will goes to get kindling, the others are surrounded by outlaws that are led by Little John.

Trivia[]

This is the only episode where Gisborne is spelled "Gisbourne".

The hanging takes place on April 26th of 1192, as stated by the Robin, when he reads out the sentence. This means that the Council of Nobles and feast take place on April 25th, Robin and Much arrive home on April 24th (Gisborne states that the Council is happening the next day), which means that the episode starts on April 23rd (Much and Robin spend a night in the forest). Since Much and Robin comment on the lack of a market as they first arrive to Nottingham, and they say that Wednesday used to be market day, we can deduce that April 25th is a Wednesday. This means that the episode starts on Monday, and the hanging takes place on Thursday. In real life, April 26th was a Wednesday, so the episode's days are off by one.
